Venturing Specific Training

Venturing Specific Training is a day long training intended to answer many of the questions that the Adult Leader may have. Advisors, Associate Advisors and Committee Members are required to attend this training in order to be considered trained for their position. Other adults wishing to learn more about the program are encouraged to attend.

The training is broken down into five sessions:

Here's Venturing

A basic introduction to the program. Participants are divided into groups. The first couple of minutes of the Fast Start tape is viewed. The BSA Mission Statement, The Venturing Oath and The Venturing Code are read and discussed. Venturing unique place in the BSA is dicussed along with what support is expected from the Chartering Organization, the District and the local Council. The Methods of Venturing are discussed along with the Advisor's responsibilities.

Understanding and Protecting Youth

Starts with a discussion on the purpose of Venturing and moves to Adolescent Development Issues. Introduces the Guide to Safe Scouting (GSS or G2SS). Ends with the viewing of the two youth protection videos for Venturing: Youth Protection Guidelines: Training for the Adult Venturing Leader and Youth Protection: Personal Saftey Awareness.

Leadership and Organization

Describes the organization of a typical Venturing Crew. Gives Definitions for the different positions that may be filled by individuals. Explains the relationship between the Adults and the Venturers. Talks about the Officer's Briefing and the Venturing Leadership Skills Course (VLSC). A portion from the VLSC is done by the participants.

Awards and Recognitions

Explanation about the BARS staircase. Introduction to Venturing Advancement and the four levels of learning. Definition of what a consultant is and how to properly use them. Boards of Reviews and Crew Reviews are both covered and the differences explained.

Resources and Program Planning

Session opens with dicussion on why youth lose interest in the program. The planning process is covered. The Program Capability Inventory (PCI) and the Venturing Activities Interest Survey are explained in full. How to brainstorming is discussed. The annual program flow for the Venturing program, including Super Activities and Open Houses, is shown.
